Five minutes turned into 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour. Before you know it your whole day has been spent on social media with a backlog of tasks that you need to complete by tomorrow.

Does this sound familiar? Well, it should. According to Statista, as of 2019 and 2020, the average daily social media usage of internet users worldwide amounted to 145 minutes per day, up from 142 minutes in the previous year. How much of this time is productive?

This is a worrisome statistic. People are failing to achieve their dreams and reach their full potential because of distractions online.

So what is the solution to this? A countdown timer.

A simple device such as a countdown timer has been shown to dramatically change human behavior by creating a sense of urgency.

A while back the story of a CEO that hired a young lady to slap him in the face was trending on social media.

Elon Musk took notice and acknowledge the CEO for doing a great job by giving him a thumbs-up on social media.

Now, I am not saying that we should stop using social media. It is a great platform with a lot of benefits. Instead what I am saying is that we need to be deliberate with how much time we use social media because the platform owners invest a lot of money to keep people invested in their platform and have them stay for longer.

This is great news for them, but it is bad news for us because our productivity is taking a huge beating.

Rather than paying a young lady to slap us in the face every time we use social media, instead, we can use a countdown timer to discipline ourselves to spend the amount of time that we choose to spend on those platforms.

Having an online countdown timer is much better because we can set the timer in one tab and open social media in another.

As soon as the timer runs out we hear a beep and we instinctively know that we need to close social media and focus on more productive tasks that move us forward.

How it works

The countdown timer by ShareTXT is very easy to use. You can get set up in 2 very easy steps

Set the timer duration
Click on "Start" to begin the countdown

While the time is counting down you have two options

Pause/Resume - This is used to suspend the countdown until you feel the need to resume it. Maybe you are going for a bathroom break and you don't want the countdown timer to keep counting down while you are away, you can simply pause the timer and resume it when you get back to continue from where you left off.
Stop - Clicking on this button will stop the timer and reset it back to zero. In this state, there is no count down and you can change the timer to a new time.

After the timer counts down to zero, your device will produce a beep sound to notify you that the countdown is over. You hear this sound even if you are in another tab.

These days you can find countdown timers everywhere. There are countdown timers in your microwave, toaster, workout equipment, and even online in e-commerce stores. These countdown timers serve different purposes.

People that work online know how easy it is to get distracted. Distractions are everywhere. To prevent ourselves from turning into online zombies that consume everything that we see, a countdown timer that prompts you to get back on task comes in handy.

As an author that needs to publish content at certain times of the day, you will often catch yourself glancing at the clock.

Your mind is doing some math when you look at the clock. If you need to publish the content at 4 p.m and the time is 2:35 p.m, your mind is subtracting 2:35 p.m from 4 p.m to try to find out how much time you have left.

That's an extra load on a mind that is already running at full speed to crank out that content before the deadline.

With a countdown timer, it is straightforward. As soon as you look at it you have your answer (2 hours 25 minutes remaining to deadline).

This reduces the mental load and frees up your mind to focus on creating high-quality content.

Why did you build this app?

This countdown timer was an application that I created for personal use. I used it locally on my laptop and mobile phone for a long time to keep track of how I spend time online.

As the time came for me to release the v3.0.0 of ShareTXT I package it up and added it to the release. So now I can continue to use the app from whatever device.

The decision to track how much time I spend online is basically for digital hygiene reasons.
